The Beach

Man it has been way too long since we went to the beach. It's alot hard to go these days with a baby. Back in the olden days we used to just pick up and go whenever. Now it takes planning. But we finally got there last saturday. Malachi wasn't really interested, he actually fell asleep on the lilo, which tui then pulled out to sea, it was so funny. So here's some pictures from the day.

Ta Da!!!

So i thought the camera was lost. We went to the beach last week saturday, and while we were getting into the car i was trying to take a picture of Malachi sitting on the roof with his towel on, it was very cute. But he wouldn't look, so i put the camera on top of the car, and put baby into the car while Tui packed everything else away. And that was the last time we saw it. A couple of days later when we wanted to take a picture of baby doing something cute we couldn't find the camera. We searched the entire house top to bottom, three times over, checked everywhere in the car and finally came to the sad conclusion that it was lost. We figured that tui had never put it into the car and that it was left on the roof and laid to rest some where along Kam Highway. I was so sad. I love my camera. I use it every single day. And to think that i wouldn't be able to capture my sons daily events makes me really really sad. Especially because we're dead broke and would never be able to afford to get another camera.

But....

tonight i was cleaning up our house and went through the dirty laundry to sort it out into whites and colours. And low and behold, what did i find in amoungst the beach towels??? THE CAMERA!!! Man, im so relieved. Now i can bring you up to speed on all the stuff we've been doing in the last two weeks. New posts, here i come!!!

It's a girl!!!

We just found out today that the baby is going to be a girl. No, not our baby. This will be our newest niece, compliments of John (Sarah's Brother) and Amy. She'll arrive here in 12 more weeks - yey!!! I just love this picture though, sucking her thumb. Amazing how cool technology is these days. I love her already!!!

To sleep or not to sleep cont.

Night 5 - getting better, only about 5 minutes of crying and then fast asleep.

Night 6 - 3 minutes of crying and he's out. He falls asleep in really weird positions though; kneeling up against the side of the crib, lying with his face directly down into his blankets, curled in a ball, legs sticking out the side of the crib. I get scared that he'll stop breathing so i move him which sometimes wakes him up. But all in all this week has worked out pretty well. I promised myself that i'd try it for two weeks and if he wasn't falling asleep on his own by then i'd stop. But it looks like i dont even need another week. this is a little recap
night 1 - 45 minutes
night 2 - 3-4 minutes
night 3 - 10 minutes
night 4 - 35 minutes
night 5 - 5 minutes
night 6 - 3 minutes

So, a note to all parents of babies or future babies, here is my advice.

1 - from day one, NEVER EVER NEVER EVER ROCK YOUR BABY TO SLEEP!!! Once you start, they'll want it every single time and will learn that the only way they can go to sleep is be rocked, which is fine for the first couple of weeks or months when they're small and you just want to hold them all the time. But once they start getting older and you have things to do, you'll regret it. So don't start!!

2 - It is possible. Trust me, if this little boy can unlearn that he needs to be rocked, nursed and sung to sleep any baby can, you just need to stick with it. It seems like the crying will never end, but if you know they're feed, clean, warm, and safe, the crying is just them expressing their frustration and objection to what's going on. But they need to be taught to sleep and this is one sure way to do it.

Now that we have the going to bed thing under control, now all we need to do is eliminate the 2am waking and wanting to play. This will be a little harder coz when he wakes up he just stands up and see's us sleeping right next to him and cries and cries because he can see us. I'm thinking i'll need to rearrange our room and maybe put up some sort of screen around him so that when he wakes up in the night we can let him cry himself back to sleep. Watch this space for updates.

Fright in the night

Last night was weird. They had issued a strong wind warning for the island yesterday - winds up to 60miles p/h. When we went to bed it didn't seem like there was anything coming so we went to sleep without another thought. Then, at about 3am i woke up suddenly, woke up tui and turned my head to watch our bookshelf that stands between our room and the lounge be blown over by the wind and come crashing down onto our table. Crash band smash went all our photo frames, books, board games, a vase, you name it. Of course everything made of glass was on that shelf. So this morning after Tui went to class i had the delightful job of cleaning up all the glass and mess. Luckily i have great neighbors who were willing to watch Malachi while i cleaned (thanks Brooke and Sam). Now we are reconsidering our house arrangement; i'm deathly affriad of something falling on my son.
I would put up pictures but our camera is MIA (meaning, we think we left it on the roof of our car when we were at the beach last week but i'm in denial about the whole thing and keep hoping it'll magically turn up somewhere.) so we don't have any pictures of it. Just use your imagaination.
It was definately the most interesting night we've had, except possibly the night i went into labour. That maybe a close second. But this is one night that i hope won't happen again.
And if you come to my house and there aren't any pictures of you on my wall, they're probably in the rubbish amoungst a pile of glass.

To sleep or not to sleep cont.

Night 4 - a little more eventful. The crying went on and off for maybe 35 minutes. And then after he'd fallen asleep, he woke up an hour later and remembered he was meant to be crying and started again. It's really killing Tui to hear him crying. I think i'm a little more accepting coz i've read the books about it and talked to people who've made it work, he's just going along with what i tell him. (kinda like riding on someone else's testimony i guess, makes it a little harder to be obedient i guess). I've promised myself 2 weeks and if he's not falling asleep then we'll have to try something else. 4 days down, 10 days to go.

Riding pony

This is Malachi's first time riding on a pony. It was 1 1/2 ft tall, made of wood, and only rocked a few inches back and forth - but he loved it!!! He does this funny chinese eye smile thing when he's really happy. It's so cute.
